The Thomasina E. Jordan Doll Collection
Small Kachina Doll, Artist Unknown, mixed media
The dolls in this display were collected by the late Thomasina E. Jordan over a period of two decades. Thomasina E. (Red Hawk Woman) Jordan, a member of the Wampanoag Tribe, was born in Massachusetts. After moving to Virginia, Thomasina worked tirelessly on behalf of the Virginia Indian community and was the first American Indian to chair the Virginia Council on Indians. She was made an honorary member of the Nansemond and Chickahominy Tribes. In 2002 the "Thomasina E. Jordan Bill" was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, requesting Historical Federal Recognition be extended to six of Virginia's eight state-recognized tribes.
This exhibition has been coordinated by the Va. Indian Resource Center, department of Anthropology, College of William & Mary.
