Basketry: By Hand - Sculptural Basketry by John Skau
 John Skau, Blue Chevrons
Before seeing the baskets of John Skau, you had better expand your understanding of what a basket is. Tradition might tell you it was made to hold some material, has a handle and was likely made from natural materials. Skau has a firm understanding of that tradition and has been exploring the sculptural possibilities of the contemporary basket for the last several years. You will see that he has developed a series of limited-production forms: the "stre-e-e-etch" basket, the classic urn, the swollen plane and the tricorn. Cut to precise widths, lengths and taper, wooden strips are dyed, then woven seamlessly into cones, tubes and bulging planes. Bold color, pattern and structural relationships are integral to Skau's work. The result is more than a show of baskets; it is truly an exhibition of sculptural basketry.
