Inuit Art Gallery - Imagination and Transformation: Inuit Prints and Sculpture
Owl/Man by James Urgalog, marble, c. late 1980's, Inuit Sculpture, Collection
Sixteen examples of contemporary Arctic stonecuts, stencils and lithography and thirteen marble, basalt and bone sculpture are featured in this exhibition. The work has been created by Inuit (Eskimo) men and women residing in the coastal areas of Hudson Bay, Baffin Island and the high central Canadian Arctic.
Inuit artists have developed distinctive styles expressing human values such as respect, power, beauty, fear, and mystery, as well as humor. These themes are depicted through images of Arctic animals including bears, walruses, and loons, in addition to Inuit people. Most of their work incorporates transformation representing imaginative creations combining animal and human physical and spiritual attributes.
This exhibition is on loan to PFAC from Judith Varney Burch/Inuit Arctic Art and an anonymous lender.
