Hyun Chough
September 11, 2001 mixed media

"Chough follows the path laid by Robert Rauschenberg (1925-) and Jasper Johns (1930-) at mid-century. Their appropriation of ephemera such as newsprint, and its inclusion as ground for expressionistic brushwork, made a significant stride towards bringing daily life and topical events back into mainstream art. Chough uses this collage technique to its best advantage, creating works that draw us in initially by their formal elegance. Once entrapped, we strain to read between the strokes of vivid color, and what we read leads us back to an unsettling world outside the gallery."

Linda F. McGreevy, Art Historian and Critic, Associate Professor of Art History, Old Dominion University

Chough enjoys combining several different materials, such as acrylic, plaster, oil pastel and newspaper. In this piece, encaustic and collage techniques achieve a heavy, built-up texture and bright color in her work. The encaustic method involves fusing melted wax and pigment onto a surface.

"My technique is a conglomeration of various techniques and styles, such as architectural structure, conceptual structure (using works in opposite position), overlapping and transparency. I try to mix different hues and their different values; the effect is similar to the pulsating notes of music, as they produce rhythm into my painting."
