Themes Worthy of the Lifetime of One Man: George Catlin's View of Native American
Halting to make a portrait, Snake Indians, Snake River Valley, c. 1854-55, oil
George Catlin (1796-1872) painted more than 500 images featuring members and events from 50 Plains Indian tribes from present-day North Dakota to Oklahoma. Although financial misfortune forced Catlin to sell his private collection consisting of his artwork and 7 tons of artifacts, much of it was recovered after his death and found a permanent home at the Smithsonian Institution.
