Modern and Contemporary African-American Art from the Alitash Kebede Collection
June 3- August 27, 2006

Living with Art presents works by many of the most important 20th century African-American artists, including Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Herbert Gentry, Palmer Hayden, Lois Mailou Jones, Jacob Lawrence and Betye Saar. Stretching from the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s to the prolific period of Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration through today, this exhibition of national stature and scope contains over 70 works by 40 artists.

According to Pfac Program Director Michael Preble, “Living with Art is quite a remarkable collection; it would be an asset to any museum. But as a private collection, it is extraordinary...it includes not only works by familiar names, but alsosignificant work by many of the artists. The delightful surprise of the collection is the quality of work by less familiar figures, whose work now stands
proudly in its contribution to the legacy of African-American art.” Offering styles, subjects and media that range broadly, the art reflects many key themes of art history.

From portraiture, landscapes and captured moments to nonobjective, abstract imagery, the entire collection was accumulated by Ethiopian expatriate Alitash Kebede. Kebede, who is based in Los Angeles, has been a friend and associate of many of the artists
included in her carefully chosen collection. “What is intriguing about the Kebede collection is not only its scope, but also in the impressive variety of expressions. Some artists show strength in creating images in the tradition of genre. Others contribute social
and cultural commentaries.

Artists like Betye Saar, Sam Gilliam, Richard Hunt and Bob Thompson are clearly within the vanguard of recent contemporary art.
There is so much to experience in this collection,” says Preble.

Living with Art: Modern and Contemporary African-American Art from the Alitash Kebede Collection is sponsored in part by CoxCommunications, Ferguson Enterprises, Grace Industries, Northrop Grumman Newport News, Raoust + Partners, the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and 100 Black Men of
America, Inc., Peninsula Chapter.

Biennial 2006
September 2 - October 29, 2006

The highly-anticipated Pfac Biennial selects the best work in all media from thousands of entries submitted from across North America. To experience Biennial 2006 will be to feel the pulse of the current state of the arts. There will be surprises, and something sure to delight everyone.

“The Biennial is one of Pfac’s most exciting exhibitions, in part because you never quite know what to expect. This year’s juror, Tony Hepburn, adds an interesting dimension to the process as a practicing artist in several different media, an experienced teacher and a published writer. Since the exhibit happens only every two years, the work tends to be fresh and provides an intriguing barometer of current work. It is in a way the perfect show – full of surprise, excitement, drama and fun – and something a lot more interesting to gossip about,” notes Pfac Program Director Michael Preble.

An internationally-known artist and head of the ceramics department at the renowned Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, MI, Hepburn is an accomplished ceramicist and sculptor who has also built a reputation for his remarkable drawings.

Biennial 2006 is sponsored in part by the Pfac Business/Arts Alliance
